Marshallia otherwise known as Grassleaf Barbara’s-buttons (Marshallia graminifolia) is a small showy flower that stands 12 to 18 inches tall.  The flower heads may look like one flower but don’t let this little guy fool you!  If you look closer you can see that it is made up of a bunch of smaller flowers called disk flowers.  Marshallia grows in pine savannahs and is native to the coastal plain region which makes Boiling Spring Lakes the perfect habitat to see it.   This perennial however does not occur as readily as some of the other plants in Boiling Spring Lakes so look hard for this one while it blooms in August.
